“Get your hand out of my pocket,” Republican gubernatorial candidate Robert Hubbard told the Piedmont Chamber of Commerce at their monthly luncheon last week. His statement reflects his desire to make the state government more efficient. Hubbard, 65, recently made his long rumored candidacy for governor official. “We have made the Department of Human Services (DHS) a handout situation,” Hubbard said. Hubbard feels he can help clean up what he sees as a mess at the DHS. He says it will take someone who can come in from the outside and who can “see the forest for the trees.” He said he believes that DHS director Howard Hendrick is a good administrator, but believes the situation there has even Hendrick overwhelmed. Hubbard, the owner of Hubbard Ranch and Supply in Piedmont, also expressed concern at some of the operations at the Department of Corrections.
