MIDWEST CITY – The loss of senior point guard Brook Ross was evident from the very start for Piedmont on Tuesday at Carl Albert. The Lady Titans forced a large number of turnovers with the absence of Ross and cruised to a 52-30 victory in Suburban Conference action. Ross suffered a season-ending knee injury against Perkins-Tryon on Saturday afternoon in Bethany during the SNU/Bethany Basketball Classic. The Lady Wildcats, which fell to 4-5 overall and 3-3 in conference play, tried several different players to fill in for Ross, but could never get into a flow offensively against Carl Albert’s pressure defense. Piedmont also lost freshman forward Sarah Parker and its other point guard Ashley Almond to injuries. “The injuries are certainly hurting us right now and they have all season long, even before the start of the season,” said Piedmont head coach George Wagner. The Lady ‘Cats were able to hang close with Carl Albert through the first half, thanks to its defensive play. Piedmont took an 8-5 lead at the 6:24 mark of the second quarter after an inside basket by senior forward Vivian Burns. Burns went on to lead the Lady ‘Cats with 11 points. Piedmont would never lead in the contest again following a 3-pointer from the left wing by Ariana Smith tied the score at 8-8. Smith’s basket was the start of a 9-0 Carl Albert run. Davie Owen hit a layup with 13 seconds left before halftime to cut the Lady Titan lead to 16-12. But Carl Albert started the second half with an 8-1 surge and the Lady ‘Cats never could recover. Desiree Bradley and Rachel Watkins scored four points apiece to lead the Lady Titan run. Burns was the only Piedmont player to finish in double figures. Kylie Boggess added eight points, while Sarah Peoples had six. Piedmont slipped past Elgin 60-57 to post its only win at the SNU/Bethany Basketball Classic last week. The Lady Wildcats suffered a 38-26 loss to Millwood, and closed tournament play with a 48-43 setback to Perkins-Tryon. Piedmont had a 12-point lead in the second half against Perkins-Tryon, but struggled down the stretch offensively and lost Ross to injury. Peoples led the Lady ‘Cats with 13 points, while Boggess followed with 10. Boggess had a team-high 14 points in the win over Elgin, while Ross added 12. Burns scored eight points to lead the way against Millwood.
